I don’t know if this is the most effective way, but it’s our way.
We have several initiatives in our household to reduce carbon.
We have two “green” bins: one with organic food scraps (it’s our compost bin for next Springs crops) and one with all other yard clippings + food scraps + cardboard or paper that has been food soaked which goes to the dump/compost with the city.
We have a garbage bin that holds 1-1.5 kitchen bags of actual waste, and a massive recycling bin which we fill each week.
Our kids ensure we keep each item in it’s place. They also know how to review the bottoms of containers for the recycling symbols and the number represented for recyclability.
Most of our kids “stuff” comes from Craigslist (their beds, their bikes, etc etc etc). I am not a huge proponent of going out and getting things from a store, paying double or more, when we can get a used item for cheaper and keep things used longer.
We also garden garden garden. We have many fruit trees, and grow vegetables. We till the soils etc. And this is all things our kids do. They use their hands to dig in the soil and they understand how the flowers pollinate, and they help to release ladybugs to eat the aphids in the backyard. They understand we combat fleas with nematodes rather than flea bombs. They get it.
We walk to the store and the park… we don’t drive. Partly because I am afraid they won’t get the energy out needed in today’s TV/Phone/Sitting society. They get it. Why waste gas and energy driving when you can walk? It takes an extra 30-60 minutes but we’ll get good sunshine and get our steps in.
We use gray water to water our plants. Buckets in the shower, stock pots in the sink. Our 8 year old dumps the gray water from the sink onto different plants each time. Eventually, we will have rain water bins on the sides of the house, and a gray water dispenser for our washing machine in the back. Our house is still under construction so it’ll probably happen next year.
We have revamped our house (as we do with all the homes we slowly flip), and doing so means new electrical. We have those new plastic LED bulbs which cost less to run; we upgraded our HVAC and we keep the temp set at 68* (even though I freeze!). Dad is always working on the house to make it better.
Growing up less than rich, my family always conserved. My kids aren’t poor by any means but they do understand what conservation means and why we do it. It’s not just for money – but also for our planet. We cannot control others, but we can control ourselves! 🙂
