For those spending too much time on Q&A sites and therefore having not enough friends in the real world to manage extinction of a half loaf of cheese, there is this home version of the Raclette & Grill:

Also, if you can choose between several varieties of Raclette cheese, go for one that is slightly darker and dryer at the outer edges than one that has the same ripeness and the same yellow color all over; the former one will have a more intensive aroma.
There are varieties of Raclette that are free of lactose for those who need to care – ask your local dealer.
We calculate 250g of Raclette cheese per person in average. You can deep freeze remaining cheese without problems, but it will become slightly sweeter that way (as far as I know because the lactose gets cracked by freezing).
4. My favorite version
I love to use very young and small potatoes which I can eat unpeeled. When we have Raclette at home, I really use only cheese and potatoes – no extra gimmicks for grilling. The only exceptions: dried Provencal herbs and roasted sesame. I spread a little of both on top of the slice of cheese before grilling it.
