She said “Well every Friday we do All you can Eat, we always sell out. Tell you what, will you be here after 10?” I told her I was closing at 11, she said OK, I’ll see you at 11, don’t leave before I show up.” I thought to myself, 11:15 comes I’m gone regardless. So I close up, and Exit the store at 11:05, and there In the parking lot is Nikki. She pulls out of her car a plastic bag with 3 to-go styrofoam containers, and that bag was like 3lbs. “Enjoy, you can freeze it and it re-heats well. You and your wife come out next Friday so you can get fresh, unless you are working.”
I told her “Next Friday is my Birthday and I’ve got it off.” She cracks her famous grin and says “Perfect. See You then.” Now my wife and I hadn’t made any solid plans so I go home, and fill her in. She’s astounded, as was I because even Reheated, that was some of the best fish n chips I had ever had, the batter Clung to that fish which I recognized as Halibut and not cod. Even the Steak style fries reheated well, and the Tartar sauce was divine, with homemade mayo and capers in it. The Coleslaw was finely minced like KFCs, which I love, and the sauce just the right mix of citrus and sweet with an undertaste of ginger.
So the next Friday my wife and go there. The place is PACKED, I mean people were sitting at tables with people they didn’t know. So Nikki and her waitstaff are whirling around the room like Taz on Meth. She catches sight of me and says above the hubub “Ken!!! Come over here!” She leads my wife and I to a table for 2 by the kitchen. She introduces herself to my wife, and they chat like old friends. She gets our drink order, comes back with A menu for my wife saying “I KNOW what you’re having.” Looks at my wife and says “I hear you don’t like fish, that’s OK, there’s lots of other choices.” So my wife and I start reading the menu, and it was HUGE.
She did Americana, Mexican, even Pizza (Went back later with the kids, and one pizza stuffed all 6 of us. As she said, a little bit of everything and she did it all well, which is usually not the case. I honestly think Gordon Ramsey would have liked her cooking. My wife ordered the Cheese Enchiladas. They were incredible. There were 3 of them, one with Sharp Cheddar, One with Monterrey Jack, and one with Blanco Queso goat cheese. The Sharp Chaddar had Standard Colorado (Rojo) sauce, the Blanco Queso had Mole (Homemade), and the Monterrey Jack – Verde sauce, all lovingly wrapped in homemade tortillas.
The refried beans were made with Lard (she warned people), and the Arroz used Actual Saffron not safflower, and had kernels of corn and slices of green olive in it for moisture. Her cooking was incredible. So I slammed down 3–3 piece portions of fish, and 2 portions of Fries and Slaw, my wife wiped her plate, something she rarely does. So Nikki comes over, and says “Ready for dessert?” Both my wife and I moan and decline, but she says “Too Bad Birthday Boy.” She comes back 5 minutes later. 5 minutes during which my wife and I work on slurping our drinks – Home brewed Sun Tea, forcing us to belch to clear out SOME room for what is coming.
Well, she comes out with a large slice of Cheesecake and mercifully 2 forks. She also brought another plastic bag with 3 to-go containers “For later.” She said. “She leans down and says into my ear “Your money is no good tonight, Happy Birthday, I’m not going to sing to you.” she leaves, swirling back into the mayhem. I Clapped him on the shoulder and said “She’s worth looking out for.” He tipped his hat to me. When we got home we found 2 complete dinners, 1 – 6 pieces of fish n chips and all the trimmings, And the other another complete 3 Enchilada dinner, and 2 pieces of cheesecake. We went back many times, several with our kids, and they grew to love it, and were always polite to her (They were hellions and not fit for civilized dining otherwise). Sometimes it would be on the house, sometimes not. I didn’t care, I was prepared to pay every time.
