What do most people get wrong about Slovakia?
Before you read: For my followers, who have already read my answers like
What myths about Slovakia bother you?
What are the major stereotypes people have about Slovakia and to what extent are they true?
What are you tired of explaining about Slovakia?
and many other similar answers like the following, this might come off as annoyingly repetitive and you might want to skip this answer. For those, who have never read those things before, I’ll keep repeating the same things anywhere I can, if that’s meant to educate people.
Slovakia was part of the Soviet Union / Slovakia is a Post Soviet country
Can you see Slovakia on this map of Post-Soviet countries?
2. Slovak people speak Russian
Slovak people speak Slovak. Slovak people need Russian lessons to learn how to speak or understand Russian. Slovak people need lessons to learn how to read Cyrillic letters.
3. Slovakia borders Russia, or is close to Russia
Russia, from a Slovak perspective, is just as far away to the east, as France is, to the opposite side. The thing is, that travelling to France is a lot easier for us, and also more common.
4. Slovakia is a newly created nation that broke off from the former Czech nation, Czechoslovakia
Yes, Slovakia is a successor of Czechoslovakia, but it is not a new nation that broke off from the Czechs. Czechs and Slovaks were two nations that created a federation state – Czechoslovakia, where both nationalities lived, each concentrated in their own region, each speaking their own language, each having their own prime minister. Czechoslovakia was dissolved by Czechs and Slovaks divorcing, technically. The Czech and Slovak are nations that have been evolving separately for more more than thousand years before joining in federation. They are NOT the same and it didn’t work out.
5. There was a war between Czechs and Slovaks which lead to the break up of Czechoslovakia.
Czech and Slovak politicians had different views and agreed to a divorce. There was no war. Czechs and Slovaks split into their own separate republics 1th January 1993. The split was arranged, not forced.
6. Slovakia and Slovenia are the same country
Slovakia is a country twice as big as Slovenia. Yes, Slovakia is quite small, and there is a country that is even smaller – Slovenia. Slovak and Slovenian people do not understand each other’s languages. The languages are indeed related and there are many similarities, which makes learning the other language easy.
7. Slovakia and Slovenia share borders
As you can see, they don’t
8. Slovakia is a 3rd world country
I hope you can find Europe on this map. (Yes, Slovakia is in Europe, sigh)
9. Slovakia is not a developed country
I’ll help you here. I’ts the same colour as USA or Canada. Zoom in.
10. Slovakia is a cold country. Nothing ever grows there and it’s snow and dark all year along
I’ll help you there (but at least you can see we don’t write in Cyrillics) Yellow zones on the map that you can see in west and east parts of the country are hot. They are flat and they don’t get much snow in winter. The green part stretching from west to east across the whole country is mild. These parts are situated on higher altitude above the sea level and there are hills. Northern part is in blue colour and this is where the rocky mountains are. This part gets plenty of snow during winter period. You cannot classify the whole country with one word when it comes to climate zones, even this small, especially when it comes to a country with such a diverse & ranging surface. We wouln’t be hanging around the pools & beaches all the time if it was freezing all the time. This is again a stereotype that originates in Russia being cold and thus every country that speaks any related language must be the same. Logic? I see none.
11. Slovakia has something to do with El Salvador
Many Slovaks are reporting on social media being asked in the USA where they were from and the people thought it is either in El Salvador or close to El Salvador for some reason.
12. Slovakia is in Eastern Europe
If referring to anything except the time period of the Iron Curtain, than Slovakia is in Central Europe. If referring specifically to the Iron Curtain Period, slovakia was on the East side of it. Before that and after that, the region was always referred to as Central European.
13. The Hollywood movies that featured Slovakia are depicting the reality.
I have some enlightening news for you. The movies like Hostel or Eurotrip aren’t no documentaries. They are horror movies and the filmmakers made an advantage of you not knowing anything about Slovakia, so they chose to pick this country and portray it as some kind of dirty, dangerous, undeveloped hole. The filmmakers didnt think of the idea that Slovak people will also see the movies and complain about it. The author of Eurotrip has already apologised.
(Bottom picture -”the Hollywood Bratislava” is from another country)
YOu might be familiar with Mexico having brown air in Hollywood movies or India having yellow air in american movies, or Russia having blueish-cold gray air in the movies? This is the Slovak Hollywood air – all colors muted, the Sky is gray, the air is dirty, no people around, only some bottles on the ground… Trying SO hard to create a depressive vibe
14. Slovak people are all blonde
Ehm, are you sure you’re not mistaking us with the Scandinavians or something? Yes, a lot of people dye their hair here but it’s fake.
15. Slovak people are dangerous aggressive fascists and criminals
Central European countries are ranked as one of the safest in Europe, when it comes to homicide rates, terror attack threats, or general peace index. The fact that you have never heard about some country, doesnt automatically mean it must be a hostile country.
16. A lot of people, when on trip in Vienna, take an advantage of Bratislava being 1 – 1:30 hour distant from it, so they visit for one-day-trip to party, visit 3–4 bars, go back to vienna and say Slovak people are drunksters and whores a there’s nothing to be seen in the country.
You make your own opinion about these people. If I go to America, for a 5-hour trip, (If that was hypothetically possible just as it is from Austria to Slovakia) and I’d choose to spend those 5 hours in local bars partying and drinkin, of course, my only experience about Americans would be just that what I saw, what I basically chose to look for.
17. Islam as a religion is not registered in Slovakia, which means it is forbidden.
There is no such thing as a forbidden religion in Slovakia. There are many religious groups that are recognised but aren’t registered, including Islam, including small Christian denominations. Not being registered simply means, that the small religious groups are not financially funded by the government (are self-funding) and the biggest religious groups are registered and able to draw money. Whenever a religious group grows big and becomes one of the dominant ones in the country, it gets registered, which means, it gets financial support from the state. That’s all the science behind it.
18. Slovak government persecutes Muslims and deports them from the country for being Muslim & also deprives them from human rights
Slovak constitution assures freedom of religion, it is a democratic country. Slovak democratic index is currently just a step above the USA’s democracy index. Slovak constitution is available online in English. Google it.
Some of our FORMER government members (whom nobody from Slovak citizens trust) made some controversial speeches. The middle eastern media went boom and Slovakia was presented as a dangerous place for Muslims. The media cherry-picked the facts and fabricated an extremely exagerrated story. Nobody says the people cited (2 or 3) are not any powerful personas in the Slovak goverment, or some of them are not part of the Slovak government anymore. One of them resigned his place from Prime Minister’s seat voluntarily, because there were huge protests against him in the country. Now we are witnessing his party falling apart and people getting jailed or tried. Nobody takes him and his party seriously here. The other one I think was tried in the court. Everybody is free to practice any religion in Slovakia. There are NO forbidden religions in the country. There is no single case of Slovak Muslims being deported. There is no single case of Slovak Muslims being treated differently by the authorities than Slovak Christians, Slovak Atheists, Slovak Jews, Slovak Bahais or Slovak Buddhists, etc. It is a crime here to violate anybody’s human rights. I recommend reading objective sources and the Slovak constitution, before reading anything that is from a (non-Slovak) government or religion owned media.
19. Slovak cuisine is beer and schnitzel. Pork and more pork. Nothing special or interesting.
Those are German and Czech things. Yes, we do drink beer and eat schnitzel sometimes too, but our cuisine is more than that. Nothing special? I’m sure you have never heard or tried many of those things here: answer to What are some traditional Slovak foods?
20. Slovaks drink vodka. Or rakija.
Again, another Russian assumption. Slovak young teenagers drink vodka probably like the American teenagers do. Because it’s affordable.
Normally, people drink wine (usually local wine) and when it comes to national spirits, than we have a thing called Borovička (Juniper spicy spirit) or Slivovica (Blue Plum brandy). That’s what the locals make and drink. Or the famous Tatratea.
Rakija is more of a Balkan thing. We don’t really drink that one either.
And no, not everybody drinks alcohol here. That’s a former Eastern bloc stereotype
