Can DC’s Constantine and Zatanna win over Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch?

So, two sorcerers from DC against two sorcerers from Marvel? Let’s do this!
Unfortunately, despite having read lots of DC comics, I don’t know much about Zatanna and Constantine other than what I’ve seen on screen. So I’m going to pit up Smallville’s Zatanna and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s Constantine against MCU’s Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange. However, I’m going to add whatever comic book knowledge I have on Zatanna and Constantine onto the fray because it would hardly be a fair fight otherwise.
So let’s take a look at both teams, ladies first
Zatanna
Zatanna is a powerful sorceress whose abilities are apparently genetic. She is the daughter of magician Giovanni “John” Zatara and Sindella, a member of the mystical Homo magi race. Zatanna is a direct descendant of the alchemist Jack Craig Hudgins as well as Nostradamus. She makes her living as a stage illusionist prior to discovering her magical abilities while investigating the disappearance of her father.
As a tribute to her father and as a focal point, Zatanna usually casts spells by speaking verbal commands backwards. She has also proven capable on many occasions of casting spells by speaking normally and in rarer occasions, the ability to use magic for simple tasks without speaking. She also owns a mansion called Shadowcrest, in which she keeps a vast library of magical knowledge as well as an arsenal of relics powerful enough to do “just about anything you’d want to do.”
Zatanna’s powers and abilities consist of:
Magic: Initially, Zatanna’s mystical abilities were restricted to granting wishes to other people. After finding her father’s spellbook she obtained a greater wealth of spells and learned that she could use magic by saying spells backwards. Her newfound powers include the power of transfiguration (which she used on Alec Abrams) and the ability to resurrect the dead at the expense of someone else’s life-force.
Magnetokinesis: By speaking “Leets yb dnuob!” (“Bound by steel!”), she was able to imprison Oliver Queen with conjured chains.
Teleportation: Zatanna had displayed multiple times the ability to appear and disappear in a blink on an eye.
Telekinesis: When Oliver was going to burn the Book of Zatara, Zatanna stretched out her hand and summoned the book to her.
Mind control: She was able to enchant champagne so that whoever that drink it (even Kryptonians) would become drunk. She also used this ability to seduce Clark although he broke free from her hold before anything happened.
Pyrokinesis: In her attempts to seduce Clark she had ignited multiple candles using a spell. She also used this in the spell to change Alec Abrams back into his younger self, igniting the pentagram made of sand on fire.
Magic for Zatanna is like breathing. It’s always been a part of her life and she’s gotten so good at it that beings from around the DC Universe come to her when they need help with mystical threats. When you’re Batman’s go-to whenever he has a magic problem, then you’re pretty great at what you do. Also, unlike a lot of other magic users, Zatanna doesn’t need to learn spells or things like that. Of course, she does know spells and things of that nature because Zatanna is nothing if not a professional, but her actual spellcasting method is quite novel- she just has to say it backwards.
Anything she can say backwards, she can make happen. First off, it’s just impressive that she can talk backwards so well. Secondly, it allows her to do just about anything she needs at any given time. Now, it’s debatable if she can do some of the things that Scarlet Witch can do with her powers, but this still makes Zatanna a powerful foe.
Now let’s look at her opponent
Scarlet Witch
As a result of exposure to the cosmic energies from the Scepter, which contained the Mind Stone (one of the six Infinity Stones, the remnant of a singularity that predated the universe, which governed over the fabric of mind), Wanda Maximoff acquired an array of psionic powers which manifest themselves as reddish, glowing energy currents and mist-like shapes from her hands. Maximoff’s powers are magical in nature, as she draws energies from other dimensions. However, she has never received formal training with her powers, so they are more chaotic and unrefined, especially when compared to Doctor Strange. During the Battle of Earth, Wanda’s powers had grown so strong that she was able to single-handedly defeat Thanos, a feat that Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America via Mjølnir failed to accomplish.
Here’s a list of Wanda’s powers:
Psionic Energy Manipulation: Maximoff can project energy blasts, streams, waves and bolts of her own psionic and telekinetic energy, allowing her to hit, push/pull or blow away her targets, potentially exerting enough force to destroy them. This energy manifests in any shape or form, outlining her telekinetic spheres of influence, as the energy is visible in a reddish color. When her energy hits a target, she can use her telekinesis to inflict further damage.
Telekinesis: Maximoff has the ability to move, levitate and otherwise manipulate objects using her psionic energy in a remote manner without the need for her energy to first be projected from her hands. Maximoff uses this energy to affect and control molecules and particles, allowing her to fully control matter and energy. Maximoff used this power to stop an off-rail train in Seoul, tear apart Ultron Sentries and rip out the central processor of Ultron’s primary body, which was made of Vibranium. Maximoff’s telekinesis can control a soldier’s gunfire and throw him away, lift Captain America into the air to enter a building, hurl aside Black Widow and Black Panther, hurl cars at Iron Man and Spider-Man, extract and dissipate an enormous amount of gas, and even hold up a collapsed watchtower for several minutes to allow Captain America and Bucky to escape.
Disintegration: Maximoff is capable of using her energy in such an acute telekinetic way that she is able to completely disintegrate objects on a molecular level, as she did with several Ultron Sentries after sensing her brother’s death.
Flight: Maximoff is able to use this power to move through the air and simulate flight, in order to hover and safely float back to the ground.
Force-field Generation: Maximoff is able to create a highly durable barrier of energy that she can shape and conform as needed. She used it to grab and break apart targets, protect others from enemy fire, contain a target or to cover and deflect attacks from enemies.
Mental Manipulation: Maximoff is able to deploy a form of mental manipulation, often as a type of illusory hypnosis, using the same neuro-electric interface that is the basis of her telepathic powers. This power can be hypnotic in nature as shown when she used it against the Avengers in South Africa, placing them in a sort of trance while she viewed the Avengers’ memories. Maximoff’s mental power is even strong enough to reverse the effects of the Mind Stone, one of the most powerful objects in existence, as shown when she freed Helen Cho from the stone’s control. She can also manipulate the memory, thoughts, actions, emotions, and senses of others at will, as well as to induce sleep or pain and create illusions without any difficulty. Maximoff was able to use this power to cause several S.W.O.R.D. agents to point their guns at Tyler Hayward.
Emotional Manipulation: With her mental powers, Maximoff often used it in order to elicit fear or emotional pain in a person in the form of nightmarish hallucinations that could stun and weaken even an individual as powerful as Thor. These visions can depict things that a person fears, regrets, or general disturbances, though the nature of it is not up to Maximoff. She is able to know what her victim is seeing and be inside the vision with them, as demonstrated when she used the ability on Harkness.
Telepathy: Maximoff can read minds, communicate telepathically, and experience the memories and thoughts of others.
Master Sorceress: As revealed by Harkness, in addition to the psionic abilities granted by the Mind Stone, Maximoff was born with latent magical abilities that were later unlocked and amplified through her exposure to the Stone. At first, Maximoff had no knowledge of her magical origins, however, when she discovered the true extent of her powers, Maximoff began studying the Darkhold and the spells found within it. According to the Darkhold, Maximoff’s powers exceeded even those of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Chaos Magic Manipulation: Able to harness Chaos Magic, Maximoff was the realization of the myth of the Scarlet Witch, a being capable of spontaneous creation. She can shape and manipulate this magic for different effects, such as forming tangible constructs of energy, like Tao Mandalas, or cast spells without incantation. Her magic is primarily composed of the same red energy as her psionic powers, but mixed with darker as well as and black hues. At first, Maximoff had no control over this power, however, upon studying the Darkhold, Maximoff gained more experience in the control of her magic.
Reality Manipulation: Maximoff can warp reality. She accomplishes this by manipulating molecular polarity, allowing her numerous other capabilities. Maximoff’s reality warping abilities began initially on a small scale, however, as time progressed, her powers have grown exponentially. Using this power, Maximoff was able to take control of Westview by placing a hexagonal force field around the town called the Hex, which emits a type of radiation known as CMBR, a remnant radiation from the Big Bang. Inside the Hex, Maximoff has absolute power and can change anything to suit her thinking, being able to create a perfect world based on classic sitcoms, as well as use her powers to rewrite reality and make any person and any object adapt to the time in which they were live in Westview, demonstrated when she had Rambeau’s bulletproof vest changed to fit the clothing of her world of classic sitcoms. In fact, every rewritten object inside the Hex, when it exits Westview, remains the same as it was inside, containing the same microscopic elements of their original forms. Due to the authentic sitcom setting, certain abilities also took on different forms within the Hex, such as the lack of energy discharge in the early eras, or the appearance of red smoke rather than energy when imitating Harkness’s teleportation. This extended to Vision as well, whose powers were symbolized by the appearance of sparkles during the 1950s. The Hex could alter almost all aspects of reality, including the behavior, thoughts, and memories of the people living inside it, as well as the entire flow of time, all to to Maximoff’s will. However, inadvertently, the spell was flawed, which caused the suppressed consciousnesses of the Westview residents to still be capable of basic sentience, but removing their willpower. Essentially, they were aware of what they were doing, but were not capable of controlling their own actions. Additionally, every resident ended up feeling the same grief and sorrow Wanda felt over Vision. This was so emotionally taxing on them that it led to some residents becoming suicidal. Although at first the Hex was only found around Westview, when Vision came out of the barrier and nearly died, Maximoff expanded the Hex to save him, also causing everything in his path to be rewritten, transforming the S.W.O.R.D. base into a circus and its agents into clowns. The Hex is able to do this even if Wanda is not aware of it, as the Hex began to immediately disassemble Vision’s vibranium body after he left, but Wanda was unaware of it happening. After gaining more control of her power by transforming into the Scarlet Witch, Maximoff was able to make the Hex disappear completely, reversing the changes it caused to everything and everyone that were still inside. Due to the nature of the Hex, Harkness described it as “magic on autopilot” because the Hex was capable of rewriting reality to fit Wanda’s vision automatically without Wanda needing to say any incantations or even having to think about it. However, the magic of the Hex does not seem to work on people or objects that have not passed through its border first, as when Hayward’s troops entered the Hex, they weren’t affected by it because they never passed through the Hex itself.
Conjuration: With a wave of her finger she was able to create wedding rings for herself and Vision. During the magic show on Westview, Maximoff was able to conjure a small crane to cover up Vision’s flight. Later on she was able to create a dog collar for Sparky. It was later revealed this was how she was able to bring back Vision, conjuring a copy of her deceased lover within Westview with Chaos Magic, as well as creating a house for them to live in.
Time Manipulation: Within the Hex, Wanda could control the passage of time for all of Westview, notably causing the time period within the town to change overnight and even accelerating the day and night cycle to fit the length of her sitcom episodes. Maximoff reverted a whole chicken into its egg form and later reversed the entire flow of time inside her reality by saying “no” in response to a S.W.O.R.D. agent crawling out of a sewer. While expanding the Hex to save Vision, Maximoff caused time in Westview to completely stop.
Teleportation: During the talent show she instantly transported Geraldine from backstage into the magic box. In her battle with Harkness, Maximoff was also able to disappear and reappear behind her, leaving behind a trail of red smoke as she did, imitating Harkness’s own teleportation.
Transmutation: Maximoff was able to change her dress, transformed a real piano into a fake cardboard cutout, turned her and Vision’s beds into a single bed, brought color to Westview and also brought fake butterflies on a mobile to life without meaning to. Maximoff was able to make herself four months pregnant inadvertently, and also caused her to give birth at a logarithmic rate. When dealing with pain from her contractions Maximoff inadvertently changed her coat several times and also accidentally brought life to a stork from a painting, however, when Maximoff tried to get rid of the stork, she was unsuccessful, as the most she could do was cause a puff of red dust to erupt around it. As her mental stability deteriorated, she further lost control of her surroundings, and began to inadvertently change objects in her home into versions from previous sitcom eras. While battling Agatha Harkness, Wanda used this ability to appear as if her life force had been drained by Agatha, including masking and hiding her psionic energy while flying in order to trick Harkness into thinking she had lost, when in actuality, she was preparing runes around the Hex to strip Harkness of her magic. Once the Hex was reversed by Wanda, everything and everyone changed by it, provided they were still inside it, reverted back to their original forms, including the clothing Wanda herself was initially wearing when she inadvertently created it. Maximoff also can transform herself from her civilian clothes to her Scarlet Witch uniform and back at will.
Electricity Manipulation: Maximoff turned a light on and off with her hand and later, while experiencing contractions, Maximoff caused a power surge that intensified the light from a ceiling light and caused a power outage that affected the whole block.
Weather Manipulation: When Maximoff’s water broke she caused a rainstorm to erupt within the Vision Residence. After the rain stopped, she generated intense winds to pour in from outside in order to dry herself, Vision, and her house.
Fire Manipulation: While experiencing contractions, Maximoff ignited a fire within the fireplace and caused it to intensify before dying down.
Protection Spell: Learned from Harkness, Maximoff used a protection spell via magic runes on the walls of the Hex that neutralized Harkness’s magic, and revitalized Maximoff’s own magic, even after having been drained of it.
Energy Absorption: Maximoff displayed the ability to absorb Agatha Harkness’ Dark Magic and transform it into Chaos Magic, amplifying her own magic to an even greater extent. Unlike Harkness, who also needs to absorb life force in order to absorb magic from others, Maximoff is capable of absorbing magic and energy without killing her target.
Astral Projection: Unlike traditional astral projection, Maximoff was able to project her astral form without losing consciousness of her physical self. She accomplished this by manifesting the Scarlet Witch outside of her own body, as demonstrated when she studied the Darkhold in her astral form, whilst also brewing a cup of tea in her physical form.
This is all regarding Wanda’s powers, now let’s take a look at her abilities:
Spy: Given that she was on the run from the government like her teammates, Maximoff was taught strategies to hide in plain sight by Black Widow, such as masking her thick Eastern European accent with an American one.
Expert Combatant: Maximoff was originally a poor fighter, having no combat skills or formal training. However, with years of experience (probably training under the tutelage of Captain America and Black Widow), she developed a fighting style in which she would infuse her psionic energy into her hands to greatly enhance her hand-to-hand combat skills and allow her to parry attacks from bladed weapons without suffering any harm due to her psionic energy protecting her hands from damage.
It’s impossible to downplay how powerful Scarlet Witch really is. Usually, it takes some kind of object of ultimate power to do some of things that Scarlet Witch has done.
So, who would win?
Yes, Scarlet Witch is way more powerful than Zatanna. When one can change reality, they hold the upper hand in a lot of situations. However, Zatanna is smart. She’s had to think her way through against opponents who are more powerful than her. Zatanna isn’t just going to let the fight get to a point where Scarlet Witch can overpower her.
At the end of the day, I personally believe that Scarlet Witch has more of an advantage since she doesn’t need of any incantations to conjure up her spells. Zatanna on the other hand, she has to speak backwards. So this is more of a matter of speed than power, whoever lands the first hit wins, so who’s more likely to cast a spell faster? Wanda who only has to lift a finger and voila? Or Zatanna who has to cast her spell by speaking backwards? I think it is very obvious who would win.
Winner: Scarlet Witch
Now it is the turn of the gentlemen
John Constantine
John Constantine is an exorcist, demonologist, and warlock, self-styled as “master of the dark arts”.
Constantine possesses a vast arsenal of powers and abilities such as:
Magic: John is a master of the occult and mystic arts. Since his teenage years, John has accumulated vast knowledge and skill of magic, mysticism, and the supernatural. He is well-versed in various forms of sorcery, including dark magic. John knows words and phrases of multiple ancient languages, such as Latin, which he will usually chant while performing certain rituals or incantations. Many incantations give him the ability to affect physical forces, such as the inner workings of mechanisms, and the movements of others, allowing him to move objects and control their motion and momentum with the proper incantation.
Binding: John is able to use his magic to bind people in magic.
Cloaking spell: John recognized and dispelled this magic at Felix Faust’s hideout.
Dark magic: John is known to be highly skilled in the Dark Arts, having studied black magic lore while still young. His knowledge of the Dark Arts is often used to dispel dark magic spells
Banishment: John is capable of banishing demonic and supernatural creatures to Hell through the use of various spells, as well as by opening portals to Hell.
Phobikinesis: With help from Neron, Constantine is now able to channel fear to power his dark magic to the point he can open a portal to Hell that people can now come back from; previously, he’d only been able to open portals that could send people to hell, but not get through from the other side.
Necromancy: John mentioned that he mastered necromancy during his teenage years. With the help of Papa Midnite, he was able to allow the spirits of the dead to move on to the afterlife. John is also capable of restoring a person’s lost soul back into their body. He was able to restore Sara Lance’s soul and mentioned he had restored a person’s soul once before. He also performed a ritual to temporarily reanimate and speak with the dead at the Chicago morgue using the Hand of Glory artifact.
Corpse reanimation: When John Constantine was under attack from Brother Voodoo he reanimated a corpse to trick Brother Voodoo.
Summoning: John can summon various entities, and even control them. He has summoned demons to fight other demons for him, and once summoned a demon into his body to protect himself from a Invunche.
Duplicity spell: John used this spell to cover the location of Jasper Winters’ mill-house.
Exorcism: John can exorcize spirits that are demonic or ghostly in origin from their hosts by chanting incantations. Exorcism is one of John’s most prominent abilities.
Glamour: John is able to use his magic to glamour his appearance to make him look like other people.
Teleportation: John is able to use his magic to teleport from one place to another as show when he transported the Legends to one another.
Inter-dimensional travel: John, along with Ritchie Simpson, knew the Egyptian dream temple technique that would allow them to travel to the reality of Jacob Shaw. John also performed a ritual that transported himself, Oliver Queen, and Laurel Lance to the spirit world, to rescue the trapped soul of Sara Lance. He later used this technique to help Ava Sharpe and Gary Green to locate Sara Lance across time and space, and gaze into the spirit world of Mallus. He can also open a portal to hell. He’s traveled to Earth-666.
Life-force transference: John was able to use a spell that allowed him to transfer a portion of his life-force energy into a child who had been drained of his own.
Light magic: Although the full extent of his expertise is unknown, John is capable of using light magic and seems to be quite knowledgeable on how to use it, as he was able to give Oliver a magical tattoo to allow him to channel light magic to fight Darhk. He was proficient enough in light magic to be capable of subduing a demon as powerful as Neron when he was off-guard with ease. When fighting Damien Darhk, he was able to completely neutralize a dark magic attack from him with a shield of golden light and easily manipulate the light into striking Damien.
Amokinesis: With help from the Legends and all the other people John has learned to use love to power his light magic. As such, using the love the Legends had for Nate Heywood, he was able to generate enough magic to bring him back.
Magic circles: John uses magic circles that can be used for rituals, as boundaries, or traps for certain creatures, such as when he used a magic circle to trap the powerful demon, Furcifer, so he could banish it back to hell.
Protection spells: John taught Chas Chandler the protective Eye of Horus Egyptian symbol technique to protect the apartment belonging to Liv Aberdine John also used a Brittonic spell to give Chas Chandler the ability to resurrect himself from the dead, but only a certain number of times. John also mentioned that he could hide Liv Aberdine from demons with a special spell.
Death inducement: John was able to temporarily kill Zari to get pass the zombies.
Pyrokinesis: John possesses some power over fire, as shown when he was able to create a small ball of fire from his hand, as well as when ignited his hands with a lighter, and suffered no harmful effects from his hands being engulfed in flames. John was also capable of firing blasts of fire.
Heat generation: John was able to use a heating spell on a door to stop the agents from following him and the Legends.
Revealing spells: John used a number of revealing spells and dispels.
Sleep spell: John used this spell to put Zed Martin to sleep.
Telekinesis: John once telekinetically closed and locked a door. He also used this power on a manifestation of a League of Assassins member, freezing the individual’ motion and suspending them helplessly in mid-air before killing the man with a sword.
Some of the abilities that Constantine possesses are:
Occult knowledge: John has acquired extensive knowledge of the supernatural. John is master of the dark arts and well versed in demonology. He has been studying the dark arts since his teenage years.
Alchemy: John is proficient in creating potent enchanted potions that allow for magical effects to happen. He was able to create a potion that was able to temporarily transform Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe into children.
Skilled detective: John is a capable detective, specializing in paranormal investigation.
Expert con artist: John has a well-known reputation of being a con man.
Expert escape artist: John has shown that he can effortlessly break free from handcuffs when being interrogated by Jim Corrigan.
Entomology: John was able to immediately recognize Khapra beetles implying he knows insects and could tell them apart very well.
Extra sensory awareness: John had an uneasy feeling when he first arrived in Star City, which Oliver immediately claimed it was because of Damien Darhk. He was also able to sense Astra’s presence when she atral projected invisibly from Hell to spy on him.
Multilingualism: Aside from English, his mother tongue, John can perform spells in Italian, Assyrian, and Hebrew so it can be presumed he knows the languages fluently. It may also be presumed he knows Arabic and Sanskrit, due to being able to read text written in these languages.
Skilled hand-to-hand combatant: John possesses some proficiency in fighting, occasionally resorting to physical fighting when he can’t use a spell. He was able to knock out two opponents, both strong miners, and he later landed a hit on Papa Midnite after a failed summoning. He later fended off ghouls while Zed Martin reclaimed Imogen’s angel feather from Zachary, improvising a nearby piece of plywood as a striking weapon, which continued until he defended Zachary from the residual Ghouls breaking into a church, however he was caught off-guard and was only saved from the restoration of Imogen’s wings. He also managed to stab Lamashtu with his switchblade while she was attempting to drown him in a fountain in Mexico City, and later fought off an Invunche even after Anne Marie Flynn put him in a weakened state by shooting him, long enough to let Pazuzu possess him to properly fight off the Invunche. In a Mexican prison, he fought off the leading brother of Santa Muerte, despite the latter wielding a knife. When Manny placed a bounty on John’s head, he fought off a “voodoo zombie” controlled by Papa Midnite, but he was no match and had to be saved by a gun-toting Jim Corrigan. He later retaliated against Midnite when he snuck up behind him and knocked him down with a series of punches and knocked him out with two hits from the stock of the Ace of Winchester. Years before, he warned Oliver Queen that he has “a hell of a right hook”. Analyzing all of Constantine’s fights, it can be said that Constantine’s fighting style is Bare-Knuckle Boxing.
Skilled swordsman: During a spiritual adventure to save Sara Lance’s soul, John demonstrated a degree of swordsmanship, able to hold his own against a manifestation of a member of the League of Assassins. However, he was quickly pressured enough that he had to resort to magic to defeat his opponent. He was also able to fight against his ancestor, Konstentyn, and ended the fight in a few moments before slicing off his hand.
While skills are always going to get someone somewhere in a battle of magic, wits are always a welcome advantage for one or the other and Constatine is one of the more crafty wizards out there. From cheating on deals with devils to finding loopholes in the simplest to the most extreme of actions and even daring to cheat death itself, Constantine has shown himself to be a crafty wizard, to the extent of it becoming his own skill and not to mention being part of his trademark charm.
Also, even though making a deal with a demon or devil is for most a nuclear option, for Constantine, it’s just another day in the office. If the roles were reversed and Constantine was in over his head, the warlock may end up making a deal with the worst kind of demon: Nergal. Now, Nergal’s name may not be as well known as Trigon or Etrigan. Yet, Nergal’s an evil demon, to say the least. Not only is he powerful as all get out, but he’s quick, sneaky, and intelligent.
Now it’s time for John to meet his opponent, the Sorcerer Supreme himself
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange’s powers consist of:
Master Sorcerer: As the guardian of the New York Sanctum, Strange is one of the most powerful members of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, possessing an extremely high level of mastery over magic which he used to defend his native reality. Indeed, despite his inexperience, an impressed Karl Mordo and Wong claimed that Strange’s prodigious skills meant that he was “born for the mystic arts,” and the Ancient One herself noted that Strange has tremendous potential as a sorcerer. Indeed, even while still inexperienced, Strange was able to use the powers of the Time Stone’s container, the Eye of Agamotto, quite effectively and safely, despite it being considered to be very dangerous for the natural order. With the help of numerous mystical artifacts and relics, in addition to his astral powers, Strange is able to gain access to a multitude of mystical powers. Strange makes up for his lack of experience with his gifted intellect, photographic memory, and ingenuity, as he swiftly imprisoned Loki, an extremely skilled master of Asgardian Sorcery, and even defeated Kaecilius by outsmarting Dormammu, forcing the latter to leave Earth’s dimension and take Kaecilius with him. Strange was predicted by Zola’s algorithm to become a significant enough potential threat to HYDRA to be targeted by Project Insight. Strange would eventually dramatically improve his power and skill in magic as he received more training and gained more experience, as, by the time of the Infinity War, he proved capable of single-handedly combating Thanos’ use of the Infinity Gauntlet more effectively than the Guardians of the Galaxy and even Iron Man, with even the Titan himself praising Strange for his use of the Mystic Arts. The Ancient One stated long before Doctor Strange became a Master of the Mystic Arts that he was always meant to be the best of them.
Eldritch Magic Manipulation: Strange is able to shape and manipulate Eldritch Magic, forming tangible constructs of energy, such as weapons or shields, as well as cast spells by writing specific formations with the fiery energy. Strange had demonstrated the ability to form his Eldritch Whips and Tao Mandalas, the latter of which he was even capable of manifesting as large spherical barrier around himself, Iron Man, and Spider-Man to shield them from the impact of Ebony Maw’s Q-Ship crashing on Titan. During the Battle of Titan, Strange demonstrated being able to conjure platforms for his allies to walk upon, as shown when Star-Lord jumped across them to attack Thanos. Additionally, he was able to craft a sword from Eldritch Magic that he used to engage the Titan alongside Drax.
Portal Creation: Using a Sling Ring, Strange is able to open portals that lead to different locations, gaining the ability to both move across the material world and to other parts of the Multiverse. Strange can also teleport others at great speeds, with him notably causing a portal to move and engulf Thor and Loki, sending them to Odin’s location, as well as rapidly open portals for Star-Lord and Spider-Man during their fight with Thanos. In addition, he can make portals small enough to reach through and grab things, such as several books from Wong’s library or to exchange one object for other, as the portal he used to abduct Loki left a card bearing the address to the New York Sanctum in his place. Strange is also able to conjure portals cooperatively, as, during Ebony Maw’s attempt to retrieve the Time Stone, he and Wong conjured separate portals to redirect several brick daggers back to Maw. There seem to be no limits to the distance Strange can reach with this power.
Locator Spell: Strange was able to scan a piece of Thor’s hair with fiery energy, briefly conjuring Odin’s symbol in the process, to aid in forming a portal that would take him to Odin.
Inter-dimensional Travel: Using the same Sling Ring, Strange can travel between different dimensions of the Multiverse, crossing over different planes of existence or traveling across various forms of reality. Furthermore, Strange can forcibly transport others to another dimension, and later retrieve them, as he did when temporarily imprisoning Loki in a dimension where he was constantly falling, leaving him there for thirty minutes until Thor asked for his release. When the Black Order arrived to retrieve the Time Stone, Strange and Wong were able to send an attack by Ebony Maw back by opening portals to a void-like dimension.
Wind Spell: Strange was able to conjure a wave of golden light that cleared the street of smoke and debris after Ebony Maw’s Q-Ship landed in Greenwich Village, while also stopping the destructive windstorm the ship was causing. The smoke was expelled from the street and towards the sky. Strange also used the wind spell to hold back the lake outside the Avengers Facility from rushing into the battlefield after its foundations were breached, gathering the water into a funnel and pushing it away.
Warding Spell: To protect the Eye of Agamotto from being stolen by Ebony Maw, Strange cast a spell upon the relic that burned anyone that attempts to take it, making it seemingly impossible to remove it unless the spell was removed, even if he were killed.
Binding Spell: During the Battle of Titan, Strange conjured dark red metallic bands to restrain Thanos’ hand so he couldn’t use the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. The bands were much stronger than the usual Eldritch Whip he uses to restrain enemies, notably able to restrict Thanos’ use of the Gauntlet for a considerable period of time, although Thanos was able to eventually break out and redirect the force of the bands to knock Strange away.
Energy Blasts: Strange was able to generate powerful bolts of fiery energy that ricocheted off several floating boulders to attack Thanos.
Duplication Spell: During the Battle of Titan, Strange was able to create dozens of copies of himself to attack Thanos with their Eldritch Whips. The duplicates, however, were quickly dispersed when Thanos released a wave of energy from the Power Stone, with only the real Strange remaining.
Earth Swallowing Spell: During the Battle of Earth, Strange opened up numerous chasms in the earth, producing glowing purple tendrils of energy that forcefully lifted up Thanos’ soldiers and dragged them into the ground before resealing themselves and vanishing.
Flight: Using the Cloak of Levitation, Strange is able to levitate, hover, and fly. The Cloak can greatly lessen the impact of falling from great heights by effortlessly reducing his speed.
Transmutation: During his meeting with Thor, Strange was able to turn a cup of tea into a large mug of beer that was also able to magically refill itself, much to Thor’s pleasant surprise. After Bruce Banner crashed through the roof of the Sanctum, Strange was able to seamlessly transform the normal street clothes he was wearing into his blue robes. During the Battle of Titan, Strange projected a spell in front of himself that transformed a singularity sent by Thanos into multitudes of blue butterflies, impressing the Mad Titan.
Conjuration: Strange was able to make an umbrella stand appear in front of Thor for him to put down Mjølnir, which had been disguised as an umbrella, as well as make a tea cup appear in Thor’s hand. He also was able to hide the Time Stone after secretly removing it from the Eye of Agamotto and later made it appear between his fingers, allowing it to float over to Thanos.
Teleportation: Strange, while in the New York Sanctum, was able to transport himself and Thor around the building with ease, which was heavily disorienting to the Asgardian. At one point, he accidentally caused an entire bookshelf that Thor was leaning against to be brought along with them, before returning it and Thor to its previous location.
Astral Projection: Strange is capable of separating his astral form from his body, gaining access to the Astral Dimension. He notably was able to assist Christine Palmer in operating on his physical body, demonstrating being able to make himself visible to her at will, using the use of the Mirror Dimension as a medium. Strange’s Astral body could also make his physical body glow from the inside out by putting his hand through it and touching it, which he used to allow Christine to better see his wound when she operated on him. As the Ancient One was dying, Strange was able to use his astral form to communicate with her astral form before her physical death. Notably, Strange found that as Palmer defibrillated his real body, his astral form would send out a blast of energy, which he used offensively while grappling with Lucian Aster’s astral form, ultimately destroying it and killing him.
Dimensional Warping: Strange was notably able to access the Mirror Dimension and transport himself, Karl Mordo, and the Zealots within the parallel reality with ease. Additionally, Strange was also capable of conjuring a construct of the Mirror Dimension in the form of crystalline fractals that acted as a shield, absorbing an energy beam from the Power Stone, and was also able to send the fractals at Thanos.
Doctor Strange’s powers were a little more varied when he was in possession of the Time Stone, but since that’s no longer the case I decided not to add them here. Doctor Strange also possesses several abilities such as:
Genius-Level Intellect: Strange achieved his MD and Ph.D. simultaneously at medical school, going on to become one of the world’s most renowned neurosurgeons, and later proving himself equally prodigious in the study of mystic arts.
Eidetic Memory: Strange’s photographic memory and perfect recall had originally greatly aided him in medical school, helping him to earn both his MD and Ph.D. simultaneously. During his mystic arts studies in Kama—Taj, Strange managed to master entering the Astral Dimension, despite Wong not believing him to be ready. When Strange used the Eye of Agamotto to restore the missing pages from the Book of Cagliostro, he only saw the page for about 15 seconds, but was able to learn about Dormammu, the Dark Dimension, and the ritual for eternal life as well as work out the ritual and deduce how the Ancient One has remained alive for so long.
Expert Tactician: Strange’s tremendous intellect contributes to his already incredible tactical insight. A highly ingenious strategist, Strange relied on pure wits to stop both Kaecilius and Dormammu himself due to his lack of experience in fighting supernatural forces. He used the Eye of Agamotto to trap the primordial entity in an endless time loop while using tactics of psychological warfare to mentally torment Dormammu instead of stopping him with magic and, as a result, ultimately succeeded in forcing his foe back into the Dark Dimension, taking the Zealots along with him.
Expert Martial Artist: After studying under the guidance of the Ancient One and training with Karl Mordo for months, Strange became proficient in martial arts, both armed and hand-to-hand combat, with his skill being great enough to allow him to fight off and evade many of the far more experienced and extensively trained Zealots sorcerers attacks while trying to escape the New York Sanctum, overpower and kill Lucian Aster, and even managing to hold his own against Kaecilius himself reasonably well, with Strange notably managing to fight Kaecilius almost to a standstill in their last altercation by using the reconstructing landscape of Hong Kong to his advantage, although he was ultimately overpowered and only defeated Kaecilius by outsmarting him rather than defeating him in pure skill. Eventually, as he further practiced and trained, by the time of the Infinity War, Strange’s skill and experience in fighting had improved significantly to the point that with help from Drax, Strange was even able to fight against Thanos himself in close-quarters combat, lasting longer than Drax, although Thanos only had the use of one eye due to the other being blinded by a webbed cotton and is quick to overwhelm Strange soon after beating back Drax. However, Strange’s hands still suffer from severe nerve and bone damage as a result of his accident, further exacerbated by the unsuccessful surgeries made towards restoring his dexterity, meaning his hands are delicate and prone to intense pain should he attempt to directly strike something or someone, thus leading his technique to consist mainly of a combination of parries and the use of spells.
Sword Proficiency: Strange displayed considerable skill in swordsmanship, as he chose to craft a sword with Eldritch Magic to use as a melee weapon to combat Thanos and alongside Drax using his knives, proved able to fight against the Titan, fending off Thanos longer than Drax.
Bilingualism: Strange is fluent in his native English, and becomes proficient enough with Sanskrit during his months in Kamar-Taj to enable him to study advanced books Wong deemed him not ready for, including the Book of Cagliostro.
So, who would win? The Sorcerer Supreme? Or the Master of the Occult?
While it is quite clear that Doctor Strange clearly stomps when it comes to raw magic power, Constantine is the last person you should choose to underestimate. The man has taken down Gods before. Sometimes multiple at a time. His cunning and meticulous planning knows no bounds. Constantine is like a cockroach, no matter what might come his way he has this unwavering grit to survive. If you’re a magic user and you want to fight John Constantine you must prepare for every possibility you can think of. Because as the devil himself very well knows, if there’s a way to undercut you by using sleazy moves, John will do it.
Even though he’s not considered one of the more powerful magic users in the DC Universe, John Constantine should not be underestimated. DC’s supernatural con man has the knowledge and the tools to keep himself on the forefront of DC’s mystical battles, or sneaking out the back way so he can fight another day. Doctor Strange and John Constantine are both scholars in their field who have collected incredibly powerful weapons and talismans of magic that they both utilize, but Strange’s mastery of the mystical arts, his connection to the magical forces of the universe and his own powerful energies eke out the win, though Constantine’s loss would likely still somehow benefit him.
Now, just because Constantine has magic like Strange doesn’t mean that they’re on the same level. Sure, John is a powerful charlatan who can use his magic in many different scenarios but his magic is always a bit different than Strange. While Strange seems to always have magic on hand, summoning it with the flick of a wrist, Constantine utilizes spells more often than the good doctor like summoning demons with backward spoken spells. Although the magic is similar to Strange’s, it is a little more powerful and dangerous as well.
But let’s remember something about heroes, a lot of their powers aren’t just from blind luck alone. Some, like Strange, got it based on their skills and time spent studying and preparing. Starting out as a non-believer, Strange slowly worked his way into the world of magic, mastering the craft over the years. Without that time and effort, Strange wouldn’t be as skilled as he is, something in part he attributes to being a brilliant Doctor, a trait that lends to his already impressive array of skills.
So, at the end of the day, while I believe Constantine could get a win with some form of deception, nine times out of ten Strange is going to blast him across multiple dimensions within the first few seconds of combat. On the Sorcerer Supreme’s home plain of existence he is always going to have an advantage and I’m afraid John is going to be pushed to breaking point.
Winner: Doctor Strange
It would be a harsh battle, something for the decades. But in the end, both of these Marvel sorcerers
proved to be way too much for these two AMAZINGLY powerful and skilled magic users
