Are you wondering if you can preserve your delicious baked beans with savory bacon by freezing them? Baked beans with bacon make for a hearty and flavorful dish, but can you freeze them successfully without compromising the taste and texture?
What is the most expensive meal you have eaten? How good did it taste?
I’ve dipped into my fair share of pricey dining outings (Alinea [pre-renovations], The Aviary, The Office, Courtwright’s before it closed, not to mention an upcoming rez at Next), but none have come quite as close as EL Ideas, located just west of the Medical District neighborhood in Chicago, IL.
{#2–“orange”: raw salmon with roe, compressed carrot pureé}
First off, it should be noted that in order to guarantee a rez at this very pricey–but surprisingly casual–fine dining establishment, you have to pay in advance. Tax + automatic 20% gratuity are already included in the cost…..which for 2 people, totaled $411.06, amounting to $205.53 per person.
{#5–foie gras, freeze dried with rhubarb, white asparagus, rose verjus, masago arare and pink geranium}
Now the question is: was it worth it? Head Chef Phillip Foss is a culinary mastermind, and his kitchen staff made all of 12 courses a highly memorable experience, but as each plate was a very delicate portion, I left still hungry. In fact, my mom and I stopped at a Wendy’s on the way home so I could indulge in a Baconator. Whatever, don’t judge me.
{#4–“black cod”: delicate whitefish with Yello beet, grapefruit gel and pistachio powder}
EL Ideas was basically a upscale dinner party, with everyone served simultaneously and no more than 20 guests at one seating. The atmosphere was splendidly unpretentious, however, with 90’s hiphop and 80’s hair metal playing between courses. Chef Foss and his staff encouraged taking selfies, asking questions, etc.
{#10–wagyu, presented with a certificate of authenticity ((we were told the cow’s Japanese name, as well as its parents names and origins)), shown here with a pickled green strawberry and dusting of maitake}
TL;DR–2 people, 12 courses, nearly 3 hours long, USD$400+.
Sure, there are certainly more expensive “dinners” out there, a la French Laundry, Noma, Everest, Masa, Le Bernardin, Cesar Ramirez’s Chef’s Table, Thomas Keller’s Per Se, and many others (that’s just in the USA!) but for me, EL Ideas takes the cake for a single meal…..so far.
It was transcendent.
***edit 4/6: added 4 additional photos of the lush courses, due to this answer getting more views than I’d initially thought***
{#8–BBQ pacu rib (the massive Amazonian fish know as tambaqui) with baked beans, bok choy and coffee/tamarind finish}
{#6–“french fries & frosty”: warm potato leek soup with crispy fries and vanilla cream suspended in a layer of liquid nitrogen}
{#7–octopus: baby octopuses with hearts of Palm and black garlic, chicory/saffron splash}
{#12–chocolate: series of small bites (nougat, banana) with crushed cashew and candied red chili, served with tri-color chocolate garnish}

Thawing and Reheating Baked Beans with Bacon
When it comes to thawing and reheating baked beans with bacon that have been frozen, there are a few important steps to keep in mind to ensure they maintain their flavor and texture. Once you are ready to enjoy your frozen baked beans with bacon, follow these guidelines for the best results.
The first step in thawing frozen baked beans with bacon is to transfer the container from the freezer to the refrigerator. Allow the beans to thaw slowly in the fridge for at least 24 hours. This gradual thawing process helps preserve the taste and quality of the dish.
After the baked beans with bacon have thawed completely, it is time to reheat them. You can choose to reheat them on the stovetop or in the microwave, depending on your preference. To reheat on the stovetop, place the thawed baked beans with bacon in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally to ensure even heating and prevent sticking.
If you prefer to use the microwave for reheating, transfer the thawed baked beans with bacon to a microwave-safe dish. Cover the dish with a microwave-safe lid or paper towel to prevent splattering. Heat the beans on high in one-minute increments, stirring in between each minute until they reach the desired temperature.
Once the baked beans with bacon are hot all the way through, they are ready to be served. You can enjoy them on their own or as a side dish with your favorite meal. The flavors of the beans and bacon will be just as delicious as when they were freshly made, making this a convenient option for meal prep and leftovers.
